Sharon Thindwa
Coordinator
(she/her)
Washington, D.C., United States

Born and raised in Malawi, the “Warm Heart of Africa,” Sharon developed an early passion for service, community, and bridging the global gap between resources and resilience. Her academic journey took her from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a minor in Political Science, to Florida State University, where she completed a Master of Science in International Affairs with a concentration in Urban and Regional Planning.

She now brings that global perspective and personal mission to her role as Program Coordinator for Peace on Purpose, further fostering the physical well-being of United Nations personnel worldwide. Whether helping a team navigate visa challenges before a mission or ensuring participants across time zones feel seen and supported during digital workshops, she is deeply committed to creating experiences that are not only logistically sound—but also human-centered and healing. Her belief in mindfulness as a tool for resilience continues to grow alongside the program itself.

Before joining the United Nations Foundation, Sharon supported operational efforts for USAID-funded programs at DAI, working across East and Southern Africa. From bustling capital cities to remote field sites, she managed the fine details of complex international programs while never losing sight of the people at the heart of the work. Her earlier roles in grants management, legal coordination, and community outreach with organizations in the U.S., Malawi, and beyond shaped her holistic understanding of international development—and her steadfast belief in collaboration, compassion, and clear communication.

Outside of work, she has contributed to youth empowerment through the United Nations Online Volunteer Program, helped secure vital resources for grassroots organizations in Zambia, and represented various countries at Model United Nations - a simulation of the UN. Across all her experiences, Sharon is guided by a desire to build systems that support others—especially in the moments they need it most. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, attending Pilates classes, and exploring the diverse culinary landscape of her city, fueled by her passion for unique food experiences.
